Goalkeeper, entrepeneur and Come Dine With Me winner. Richard Lee has a rich CV (pardon the pun) and has been considered a fan favourite right up until he left the club at the end of last season. We spoke to him exclusively to find out what's next for him, his thoughts on "New Brentford's" statistical approach, as well as his prediction for this up and coming season...
Q: Following your retirement from football, what have you been up to?
A: It's been quite a busy period so far, I have business interests elsewhere which I've been able to delve into so have been at the Euro's watching England U21's as well as Ireland to help promote a coffee business I'm involved in. I had a few days in Florida too.
Q: What's next for Richard Lee?
A: I'm hoping to delve into the world of media a bit more if given the opportunity and continue to build the projects I'm currently working on. These included a goalkeeping business that I've franchised, a player management company and a coffee business. It'll no doubt be quite a change from donning the glove every day but the idea of building these businesses excites me greatly.
Q: What do you make of Brentford's new statistical approach?
A: I can understand the thinking behind it and given Matt Benham's track record I've no doubt he will continue to find success. My only concern would be in regards to how Brentford start next season. It's always difficult after being knocked out in the play offs and with the many changes just hope that the lads are able to continue from where they left off.
Q: To what extent were Brentford using statistical analysis whilst you were at the club?
A: Quite a bit and it is effective. I do think there is a proven way to play the game and Matt Benham (along with Mark Warburton) have created a model that really works. I've no doubt the style created on the back of statistical analysis will be kept in place meaning that the standard of football will certainly remain high.
Q: What did you make of Watford, your former club, and their promotion campaign last season?
A: I was delighted for them. It's strange to think that I was there only a few years ago as the club has changed beyond recognition and there are only a few faces that I recognise there now. They do have some fantastic individuals and although I think it'll be a tough order for them next season they are as well equipped as they've ever been to stay in the top flight.
Q: Any predictions for what lies in store Brentford this upcoming season?
A: I think we over-achieved last season so if they could maintain a play-off place I think that would be a huge success. I think they'll finish between 6th and 10th.
Q: Will you be attending any Brentford matches in the foreseeable future?
A: Yeah absolutely. I'm really excited to return as a fan and will no doubt be hassling Peter Gilham on a regular basis for tickets!
