Brentford have made their first signing of the summer since we made a change in how the club was run, and it's fair to say that it is one few would have predicted. Dijkhuizen and his team have added free agent Ryan Williams on a one-year contract.
The 24-year-old was without a club following his release by League Two side Morecambe at the end of last season.
Brentford co-directors of football Rasmus Ankersen and Phil Giles are keen to use statistical analysis to help them sign players and the latter believes that there is some "unreleased potential" in Williams. "Ryan is a player who we feel has a lot of unreleased potential and we can really help develop him over the season," Giles told the club website.
This statement hints that Williams will probably not serve as a member of the starting line-up, but may play more of a supporting role, similar to that of Tommy Smith last season.
Following the successful step of Andre Gray from Conference to Championship last season, hopefully William can adapt in a similarly pleasing fashion. However, Gray left the Conference as top scorer and for a fee of 500K, whilst Williams was deemed surplus to requirements at Morecambe.
We have already signed Akaki Gogia on a long-term deal last month, but Williams is the first new addition since the club's new management structure was fully completed with the addition of Marinus Dijkhuizen as head coach.
